Where does energy come from?
100% Hardcore Truth
By Chris Walker  Fitness Professional

Have you ever asked where energy comes from and how the food you eat fuels your body? Well, in order to obtain a fitness result it’s important to know how energy production takes place. So let’s take a closer look at what’s going on at the cellular level.

Energy Explained

All energy comes from the sun. Plants use light energy from the sun to form carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Carbohydrates can be broken down as sugars and starches used by the body as fuel molecules and energy storage. Fats are compounds that store energy. So far so good? Ok, let’s continue. Protein is a little more complicated and used in tissue reproduction as well as other important functions in the body. Protein can be further broken down into amino acids which are large complex molecules. If you’ve ever purchased protein powder you’ll see a list of amino acids on the label.

The Cycle

Animals eat other animals and plants to maintain cellular activities and then we come along and eat these animals who have eaten the plants. This looks like a good vegetarian argument, I guess we could just cut to the chase and eat plants....mmmmm. Well, I’m not a vegetarian and I love meat so let’s continue. The body then uses these macro nutrients (carbohydrates,  protein and fat) to maintain cellular activity both at rest and at play. Since all cells require energy this constant conversion must always be in place. People who complain about low energy are not properly participating in this equation or they are substituting good macro nutrient intake with poor nutrients that often have no nutritional value (junk nutrients or junk food).

Conclusion

The ability to run, jump, skip, work, play is limited by your ability to transform food into biological energy sometimes we face prohibiting factors like poor circulatory systems, sickness or disease but for the most part we are in control of our energy production. Eating 5-6 meals of moderate size every 3-31/2 hrs will ensure a steady flow of energy to perform daily functions. Oh, and make sure your getting the good macro nutrients each meal should consist of a protein a starchy carbohydrate and a fibrous carbohydrate. Stay fit!
