Fermented Red Yeast Rice
100% Hardcore Truth
By Chris Walker Fitness Professional
Lately, alternatives and herbal medicine have been gaining in popularity, most of them great, while others just hype. Fermented Red Yeast Rice has been praised for it’s ability to lower LDL cholesterol (bad fat). Over 50% of Canadians are overweight or obese, as a result are struggling with high cholesterol; commonly doctors prescribed Statins a class of drugs that lowers the level of cholesterol in the blood by reducing the production of cholesterol by the liver. Statins block the enzyme in the liver that is responsible for making cholesterol. Cholesterol is critical for normal body function and is produced by your body in sufficient amounts, however additional cholesterol is not needed through your diet. The most common Statin prescribed is Lipitor (the most potent) but because of it’s side effects high cholesterol patients are in search of an alternative, especially when medicated long term. The most common side effects are headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, rash, weakness and muscle pain. The most severe are liver failure and muscle loss (Rhabdoyolysis).
What is Red Yeast Rice?
Ok, enough about Statins. What is Red Yeast rice? I only have good things to say; it works and it’s natural. Red yeast rice is rice that has been fermented by the red yeast (Monascus purpureus). It has been used by the Asians for many centuries as a food colorant and preservative, with an estimated average consumption of 14 to 55 grams of red yeast rice per person daily. It’s been used in China for over 1000 years for medicinal purposes and has been proved useful for improving blood circulation, alleviating indigestion and diarrhea. Recently American and Chineese scientist developed red yeast rice as a product to lower blood lipids, including cholesterol and triglycerides. Studies have consistently shown that red yeast rice lower total cholesterol by an average of 10-30%, LDL by an average of 10-20%, lower triglycerides by an average of 15-25% and increase HDL by an average of 7-!5%
How do I buy Fermented Red Yeast Rice?
There are three major preparations of red yeast rice: Cholestin or Hypocl, Xuezhikang and Zhitai. Not all red yeast rice products contain the same concentrations of cholesterol lowering ingredients, Xuezhikang and Zhitai are the best choices out of the three major preparations
How safe are Red Yeast Rice Products?
Scientists believe red yeast rice is safe long term because it has been apart of the Asian diet for thousands of years without toxicity or side effects. Animal studies have been conducted in China using high doses of red yeast rice products. No damage to the liver, kidneys and other organs have been found in these studies.
