DHEA
100% Hardcore Truth
By Chris Walker Fitness Professional
Supplement companies have made great claims about DHEA or Dehydroepiandrosterone, wow, say that 3 times fast. DHEA is sold as: a rejuvenator or anti– aging supplement, energy enhancer, strength booster, muscle builder and fat burner. None of these claims have consistent scientific evidence proving their validity. Dangerous side effects can occur when we venture to manipulate our hormonal cascade.
DHEA Defined
DHEA or Dehydroepiandrosterone is a hormone made from cholesterol by the adrenal glands. The body converts DHEA into estrogen and testosterone. Production of DHEA peaks in the mid 20’s but gradually declines as we age; because this substance is responsible for the hormones estrogen and testosterone supplementation is thought to increase or support the above mentioned claims. DHEA has been called “steroid of the youth”. Scientist have not fully understood what role DHEA plays but we know supplementation can cause the following side effects: oily skin, acne, excess body hair, aggressiveness and liver damage. In addition, because we know that different people produce different levels of DHEA it can prove to be detrimental even if taken for a short period of time. Studies have shown that testosterone may play a role in cancer and higher levels of estrogen are associated with increased risk of breast cancer.
Conclusion
There has not been enough research to determine the risks and benefits of DHEA supplementation, so leave the manipulation of hormones to your doctor!
